Do these actions now

Immediate UPI fraud response plan

Do not wait to collect perfect evidence before making the first report. Report immediately, then add details and follow up through official channels.

1

Call 1930 immediately

Report the financial cyber fraud and save the acknowledgement or reference provided. Explain the fraud clearly and accurately.

2

Notify your bank

Use the bank's verified fraud-reporting or grievance channel. Ask it to secure affected access and prevent further unauthorised transactions.

3

Secure your accounts and device

Change compromised credentials through trusted channels, remove suspicious remote-access apps, and review other recent transactions.

4

File the online cybercrime report

Submit the incident through the official portal. Keep the acknowledgement number because it is required to track the complaint.

5

Preserve all evidence

Save the UTR, bank statement, screenshots, chats, numbers, links, QR codes, collect requests, call logs and complaint references.

6

Follow up in writing

Send dated reminders to the bank and relevant authorities. Quote every earlier complaint number and preserve all responses.

Never share: UPI PIN, OTP, password, card details, CVV, full account credentials, or remote screen access. Receiving a refund does not require entering your UPI PIN.

Protect your right to escalate

Build a written complaint record

A phone call may help you understand the issue, but it usually does not give you enough proof of what was submitted or when. Create a traceable record from the first complaint onward.

1. Submit formally

Use the complaint option in the transaction, the bank's official grievance channel, NPCI UPI Help, or another proper authority.

2. Obtain acknowledgement

Save the complaint number, email acknowledgement, portal screenshot, or stamped receiving copy for an offline complaint.

3. Preserve your evidence

Keep the transaction ID, bank statement, screenshots, written explanation and every response together.

4. Follow up in writing

Send dated reminders that quote the original complaint number. Keep copies and proof of delivery.

5. Record the timeline

Maintain a simple list of complaint dates, reminders, replies, promises and missed deadlines.

6. Escalate with the file

When moving to a higher authority, attach the complaint trail so it can see what happened and what remains unresolved.

Important: Do not rely only on verbal assurances. If you visit a branch, submit a written complaint and request a stamped or otherwise acknowledged receiving copy.

A UPI fraud complaint needs more than one report

Fraud reporting and bank grievance handling serve different purposes. Do not wait for one channel to reply before using the other appropriate official channels. Preserve a separate acknowledgement from each.

1. Call 1930

Use the National Cybercrime Helpline for immediate reporting of financial cyber fraud. Record the time of the call and preserve the acknowledgement or reference.

2. File the online cybercrime complaint

Submit the incident details and available evidence through the official National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. Save the acknowledgement number required for tracking.

3. Notify the bank immediately

Use the bank’s verified fraud-reporting or grievance channel. For an unauthorised transaction, clearly state that you did not authorise it and ask the bank to prevent further loss.

4. Report the transaction in the UPI app

Open the fraudulent transaction and use its complaint or help option. Keep the complaint number and any written response from the app provider.

Payment happened without your permission

Clearly tell the bank that the transaction was unauthorised. RBI guidance says customers should notify their bank immediately, and banks must take immediate steps after receiving such a report to prevent further unauthorised transactions.

Preserve proof of exactly when and how you notified the bank. Do not casually say you authorised the payment if you did not.

You authorised it after being deceived

If a scammer impersonated someone, sent a fake QR code, created a false emergency, or persuaded you to approve a collect request, explain the deception accurately.

Do not incorrectly describe the payment as unauthorised merely because you later discovered the fraud. Accurate facts help authorities understand and investigate the incident.

Preserve evidence before blocking or deleting

Secure the account quickly, but first capture the evidence you can safely preserve. Do not continue communicating merely to collect more proof.

  • UPI transaction ID or UTR, amount, date and time
  • Name of the bank, wallet, merchant or UPI app involved
  • Bank statement showing the debit
  • Fraudulent UPI ID, QR code, collect request or payment link
  • Phone numbers, email addresses, social-media profiles and website links
  • Chats, SMS messages, call logs, emails and relevant recordings
  • Screenshots of remote-access apps or suspicious permissions
  • Every bank, app, cybercrime and police acknowledgement
  • A dated timeline of the fraud, reports, reminders and replies

Stop further loss after reporting the fraud

Reporting the transaction is only one part of the response. If the scammer gained access to your device, credentials, SIM, email, or payment accounts, secure the affected paths using trusted channels.

Secure financial and identity access

  • Use verified bank channels to block or restrict affected access.
  • Change compromised credentials from a trusted device.
  • Review linked accounts and recent transactions.
  • Protect the email and mobile number used for banking.

Secure the device used in the fraud

  • Disconnect suspicious screen-sharing or remote-access sessions.
  • Remove unknown apps only after preserving useful evidence.
  • Review accessibility, notification and device-administrator permissions.
  • Seek trusted technical assistance if compromise may continue.

Write a clear UPI fraud complaint

Describe what happened in chronological order. Be precise about whether the payment was unauthorised or whether you authorised it after being deceived. Include every complaint acknowledgement and request a written response.

I am reporting a suspected UPI fraud involving the following transaction:

Date and time: [details]
Amount: ₹[amount]

UPI dispute redressal mechanism

Escalate in the right order

Start where the transaction occurred, preserve each reference number, and move upward when the issue remains unresolved.

1

UPI app

Open the original transaction and use its help, dispute or complaint option.

2

Your bank

Contact the bank linked to the debited account and retain the grievance reference.

3

NPCI UPI Help

Check transaction status or raise an eligible UPI complaint through the official mechanism.

4

RBI Ombudsman

Use RBI CMS after first complaining to the regulated entity and meeting eligibility conditions.

Follow up without losing the original trail

Send reminders that quote the original bank, app, cybercrime, and police references. Maintain one dated chronology showing what you reported, what each authority replied, and what remains unresolved.

Do not repeatedly create disconnected complaints unless an authority instructs you to do so. A complete trail makes the history easier to understand.

Escalating an unresolved bank grievance

RBI’s Ombudsman mechanism generally requires a prior complaint to the regulated entity. It may be available if the entity rejects the complaint, gives an unsatisfactory response, or does not respond within 30 days, subject to eligibility conditions.

Your dated acknowledgement, reminders, and bank responses help demonstrate the complaint history. Cybercrime investigation and a bank-service grievance are separate processes and may proceed independently.

Common UPI fraud situations

The method may differ, but the response remains similar: report immediately, secure affected access, preserve proof, and follow up through official channels.

Fake customer-care or refund call

The scammer claims money will be returned after you share credentials, approve a request, or install an app.

Fraudulent collect request

You approve a collect request believing it will credit money, but entering the UPI PIN authorises a debit.

Friend, employer, police or official impersonation

A scammer creates urgency or fear while pretending to be someone you trust or an authority.

QR code or merchant substitution

A fake or replaced QR code sends the payment to a scammer instead of the intended person or merchant.

Screen-sharing or remote-access fraud

The scammer persuades you to install an app or grant access that exposes payment or authentication activity.

Unauthorised UPI debit

A transaction appears that you did not initiate or approve. Notify the bank immediately and state the facts accurately.

UPI fraud complaint questions

Where should I report UPI fraud immediately?

Call the National Cybercrime Helpline on 1930 immediately, notify your bank through a verified channel, and file an online report through the official National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.

Should I wait for the bank before calling 1930?

No. Report suspected financial cyber fraud immediately through 1930 and notify the bank without delay. Do not wait for one channel to respond before using the other appropriate official channels.

What information should I keep ready?

Keep the bank, wallet or merchant name, transaction ID or UTR, transaction date, fraud amount, statement entry, screenshots, communications, suspect identifiers and complaint acknowledgements.

Is entering a UPI PIN required to receive a refund?

No. A UPI PIN authorises a debit from your account. Do not enter it merely because someone claims they are sending you a refund.

Can anyone guarantee recovery of money lost through UPI fraud?

No genuine adviser can guarantee recovery. Never pay an unofficial recovery fee or share an OTP, UPI PIN, password, card details, or screen access.
