UPI Complaint Online: File It Properly, Preserve Proof and Escalate
A phone call may alert support, but it should not be your only complaint record. Submit the issue through an official complaint form, in-app support channel, bank grievance page or government portal. Save the acknowledgement, reference number and every follow-up.
Your objective is not merely to speak to someone. Your objective is to create a dated, verifiable complaint trail.
Start with the right route
What happened to your UPI transaction?
Select the closest situation. This does not submit a complaint or collect your information.
Failed, pending or debited transaction
- Open the transaction in your UPI app and raise an issue.
- Save the ticket number and transaction status.
- Submit a written complaint to the debited account's bank if it is not resolved within the stated time.
- Escalate through the bank hierarchy, then use NPCI UPI Help or RBI CMS when applicable.
Money sent to an unintended recipient
- Report the transaction immediately in the app and to your bank.
- Request beneficiary-bank coordination and preserve the bank's written response.
- Do not threaten or publish the recipient's personal information.
- Escalate with the original complaint trail if the response is absent or inadequate.
Suspected cyber financial fraud
- Contact the bank immediately to report the unauthorised or induced transfer.
- Call 1930 and complete the report at the official Cyber Crime Reporting Portal without waiting for normal complaint timelines.
- Raise app and bank complaints in parallel.
- Save every acknowledgement and cross-reference the cybercrime and bank complaint numbers.
Merchant payment or refund dispute
- Preserve the order, invoice, cancellation and merchant communication.
- Raise the transaction issue in the UPI app.
- Complain in writing to the bank and state whether goods, services or a promised refund are involved.
- Keep the merchant dispute and UPI payment complaint records together.
Before You File a UPI Complaint Online
Create one folder on your phone or computer for the case. Use a clear name such as UPI complaint – date – amount. Keep original files where possible rather than relying only on cropped screenshots.
Collect the transaction facts
- UPI transaction ID, UTR or reference number
- Transaction date, time, amount and status shown in the app
- Your UPI app and the bank account debited
- Payee name and UPI ID as displayed in the transaction record
- Bank statement or account entry showing the debit
- Screenshots of the transaction and any error message
- A short factual description of what happened and the resolution requested
For suspected fraud, preserve more evidence
- Phone numbers, email addresses, UPI IDs and website addresses used by the suspected fraudster
- Chat, SMS and email records with visible dates and times
- Call logs, advertisements, QR codes or social-media profiles involved
- Cybercrime acknowledgement and police complaint or FIR details, if available
Never upload or send your UPI PIN, OTP, card PIN, password or full card credentials. Genuine complaint handling does not require you to approve a collect request or install a remote-access app.
The proof rule
After every submission, save:
- The completed complaint or sent email
- The acknowledgement screen or email
- The complaint or ticket number
- The date and channel used
- The promised response time
If an offline complaint is submitted, take a stamped and dated receiving copy. If staff refuse, record the date, branch and person approached, then submit through the bank’s official online grievance channel or registered post.
How to File a UPI Complaint Online
Step 1: Raise the issue inside the UPI app
Open the exact transaction and use options such as Report issue, Get help or Raise complaint. Select the accurate problem category. Do not choose “fraud” for a normal failed or pending transaction, and do not describe unauthorised fraud as a routine refund delay.
Take screenshots before and after submission. Save the app ticket number and any stated turnaround time.
Step 2: Submit a written complaint to your bank
The bank account from which money was debited is an essential part of the complaint chain. Use the grievance or complaint form on the bank’s official website, secure internet banking, official app, email listed in its grievance policy, or a branch complaint with a receiving copy.
Your complaint should state the transaction facts, app ticket number, issue, remedy requested and attached evidence. Ask for a written acknowledgement and complaint reference number.
Step 3: Escalate within the bank
Every bank publishes its own grievance redressal hierarchy. The titles may include Customer Care, Grievance Redressal Officer, Nodal Officer and Principal Nodal Officer. Follow the levels and timelines shown on your bank’s current official grievance policy. Forward the original complaint and acknowledgement instead of starting an unrelated new case.
Step 4: Use NPCI UPI Help for an unresolved UPI issue
NPCI’s official UPI Help facility can be used to check eligible transaction status and raise or track UPI complaints. Include your earlier app and bank references so the history is visible. NPCI should not replace immediate cybercrime reporting where deception or unauthorised transfer is suspected.
Step 5: Approach RBI CMS when eligible
If the regulated entity rejects the complaint wholly or partly, gives an unsatisfactory response, or does not respond within 30 days after receiving it, the complaint may be eligible under the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. RBI CMS normally expects proof that the complaint was first made to the regulated entity.

Fraud route: report without waiting for the normal ladder
For suspected cyber financial fraud, notify the bank immediately and report through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or helpline 1930. Continue the app and bank complaint trail in parallel. A cybercrime acknowledgement does not replace a bank complaint, and a bank ticket does not replace a cybercrime report.
UPI Complaint Escalation Matrix
Use the matrix as a route map. The exact designation and response time at each bank can differ, so verify the current grievance policy on the bank’s official domain.
| Stage | Where to complain | What to preserve | When to move forward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Urgent parallel route | Bank plus 1930 / Cyber Crime Reporting Portal for suspected fraud | Cyber acknowledgement, bank ticket, UTR, evidence and time reported | Do this immediately. Do not wait for an app or bank response. |
| 1. UPI app | Report the exact transaction through in-app help | Submission screenshot, ticket number and stated response time | If not resolved within the stated time, or the response is inadequate |
| 2. Your bank | Official complaint form, secure message, listed grievance email or branch with receiving | Full complaint, attachments, acknowledgement and reference number | According to the bank's published grievance timeline |
| 3. Bank escalation | Grievance Officer, Nodal Officer or Principal Nodal Officer as named by the bank | Original complaint chain, reminders and response or non-response proof | When the prior level's published time expires or its decision is unsatisfactory |
| 4. NPCI UPI Help | Official NPCI UPI Help | UPI transaction details plus app and bank references | For an unresolved UPI issue where NPCI's complaint facility is applicable |
| 5. RBI Ombudsman | Official RBI CMS | Complaint to regulated entity, acknowledgement, replies and complete evidence | After rejection or an unsatisfactory reply, or no reply within 30 days, subject to scheme eligibility |
Important: NPCI is not always a mandatory step before RBI CMS. Follow the remedy applicable to the entity complained against. Bank designations and internal levels vary, so use the current grievance policy on its official website.
Send Timely Written Reminders
A reminder should identify the existing complaint, not create confusion with a fresh unsupported story. Quote the original reference number in the subject line and attach the earlier acknowledgement.
Practical follow-up schedule
- Immediately: Save the acknowledgement. If none appears, capture the submitted screen.
- Within 24-48 hours: Ask for acknowledgement if no ticket number was issued.
- After the stated response time: Send a dated status reminder. Do not wait indefinitely.
- At the next bank level: Escalate with the complete prior chain when the published timeline expires or the answer is inadequate.
- Before 30 days: Send a consolidated reminder to the appropriate bank grievance officer and preserve delivery proof.
- After 30 days: Consider RBI CMS if the eligibility conditions are met.
This schedule is practical guidance, not a replacement for a bank’s published turnaround time or any shorter deadline applicable to a particular transaction type.

Build Your Communication Record
Use one row for every complaint, reminder, reply and escalation. This makes it easier to demonstrate what was submitted, when it was received and whether the institution responded.

What a Strong Online Complaint Contains
- Identification: your name and registered contact details, without publishing sensitive credentials.
- Transaction: UTR, date, time, amount, payer bank, app and displayed beneficiary details.
- Problem: a chronological factual account without speculation.
- Previous action: app ticket, bank complaint and earlier reminder references.
- Requested remedy: reversal, status correction, investigation, written explanation or another specific outcome.
- Attachments: numbered files listed at the end of the complaint.
- Closing request: acknowledgement, complaint number and written response.
Common Mistakes That Weaken the Record
- Only speaking by phone and keeping no written confirmation
- Submitting repeatedly through different channels without quoting earlier ticket numbers
- Sending cropped screenshots that hide date, status or transaction reference
- Writing an emotional narrative without a clear chronology or requested remedy
- Waiting for weeks without reminders or escalation
- Using search-result phone numbers, unofficial forms or social-media “support” accounts
- Sharing an OTP or UPI PIN with someone claiming to process a refund
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a UPI complaint only by calling customer care?
A call may be useful for urgent notification, but keep a formal written complaint as well. Ask for a ticket number and follow the call with an official form, secure message, email or branch submission that can be proved later.
Should I complain to the app or the bank first?
Raise the issue against the transaction inside the app and notify the bank whose account was debited. Preserve both references. If fraud is suspected, report to the cybercrime system immediately in parallel.
When should I escalate a UPI complaint to NPCI?
Use NPCI UPI Help when the UPI issue remains unresolved or when its transaction-status and complaint facility is relevant. Include the app and bank complaint history rather than presenting the matter without context.
Must I complain to NPCI before RBI CMS?
Not necessarily. RBI Ombudsman eligibility principally depends on first complaining to the regulated entity and then receiving an unsatisfactory or rejected response, or no response within 30 days. Keep NPCI and bank records where they are relevant to the dispute.
How often should I send reminders?
Follow the response time stated in the acknowledgement or the bank’s grievance policy. If there is no acknowledgement, seek one promptly. After a promised or published timeline expires, send a written reminder and escalate with the complete record.
What proof should I keep after an online complaint?
Keep the submitted text, attachments, acknowledgement, complaint number, delivery proof, screenshots, replies and each reminder. Maintain a dated communication log.
Is a cybercrime complaint the same as a bank complaint?
No. For suspected fraud, the cybercrime report concerns possible criminal activity while the app and bank complaints address the payment and account dispute. Complete the relevant routes in parallel and cross-reference their acknowledgement numbers.
Can UPIComplaint.com file the complaint for me?
No. UPIComplaint.com is an independent guidance website and is not NPCI, RBI, a bank, a UPI app or a government authority. Complaints must be submitted through the appropriate official channel.
Final Check Before You Submit
Use the correct official channel, state the facts, ask for a specific remedy, attach readable evidence and save proof of submission. Then diarise the response date. A complaint that can be shown, dated and followed is stronger than a conversation that cannot be proved.
